Ingredients
- 12 Hawaiian Rolls
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or avocado oil)
- 1 pound ground beef (90/10)
- 1/2 medium yellow onion (finely diced)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup water (add more if needed)
- 2 cups cheddar cheese (shredded)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) or 160°C if you have a fan oven, and grease a 9×9 or 7×11 inch baking pan/sheet (if you don’t have either, then use 9×13-inch).
- Slice the rolls in half using a serrated knife to separate the tops from the bottoms. Place the bottom part in the baking pan or sheet.
- Heat olive oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, onion, and garlic. Cook until the beef is no longer pink, breaking it up with a spatula, for about 5-7 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to medium and add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, tomato paste, and chili powder directly into the skillet. Stir well to ensure the beef is evenly coated.
- Pour in the water and stir, ensuring everything in the skillet is well combined.
- Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors have melded together and the sauce has thickened slightly.
- Transfer the sloppy joe mixture over the slices bottom half of the Hawaiian rolls, and spread evenly.
- Cover the meat mixture with shredded cheese, then with the tops of the rolls. Brush with melted butter, and sprinkle the sesame seeds on top.
- Bake in the oven uncovered for 15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown (watch closely so they don’t burn). Remove, allow to cool down for a few minutes, and serve.
